THINGS TO KNOW
Some things to know for your Winter trip to the Snowies.

It’s a different world up here in the Snowy Mountains! To ensure your trip goes smoothly, here are some tips and recommendations

Book Ahead

Purchase ski lift passes for Perisher, Thredbo, or Charlotte’s Pass online. Check their websites for current prices.

Timing

It can get very busy during school holidays and weekends, so set off early in the morning. Buy your passes at the Kosciusko National Park Entry Gate. The winter price is $29.

Fuel & EVs

Ensure you have enough fuel before leaving Jindabyne, as there's only a small service station in Thredbo. There are two charging stations in the car park opposite Jindabyne Central School on Kalkite Street. Access from Snowy River Avenue.

Snow Chains

If you have a 2-wheel drive vehicle, hire snow chains (required by law in winter). You can get them from the BP Service Station on Kosciusko Road in Jindabyne. Snow chains are optional but recommended for 4-wheel drive vehicles.

Ski Gear

Hire skis, snowboards, boots, and all your ski gear from one of the many outlets in the old town of Jindabyne (near the Banjo Patterson Inn) before heading up the mountain. Resort ski shops can be very busy.

Footwear

Ice and snow can be slippery, so make sure you have sturdy footwear with a thick sole and good grip.

Clothing

The weather on the mountains is very changeable, so bring extra layers of clothing, a hat, and a jacket. Jindabyne is one of the best places in Australia to buy serious winter clothing.

Winter Activities

  • Skiing & Snowboarding:

    • Book your ski lift passes and hire gear in advance.

  • Tobogganing:

    • Hire a toboggan and head to Dead Horse Gap (just beyond Thredbo). There are a few parking spaces there, and it won’t cost you anything other than the entry to the national park.

  • Cross-Country Skiing & Snowshoeing:

    • Try cross-country skiing or snowshoeing at Guthega.
